Regulation 0512-10
Adult Enrollment 21 Years of Age or Older
West Ada School District recognizes that earning a high school diploma can open important doors to future education, employment, and personal growth. Some adults may wish to return to school later in life to complete the credits needed for graduation.
This regulation explains how individuals who are 21 years of age or older may request enrollment in West Ada School District to complete graduation requirements through a structured virtual learning program. The process ensures that students have a clear plan for completing coursework while maintaining appropriate expectations for progress and program participation.
REQUESTING ENROLLMENT
Adults who are 21 years of age or older and would like to return to school to earn a high school diploma may request enrollment with West Ada School District.
The first step is to contact the District’s Chief Academic Officer to discuss possible enrollment and determine whether the program is a good fit for the individual’s circumstances and remaining graduation requirements.
If enrollment is approved, the District will work with the returning student to develop a Student Enrollment Plan that outlines the courses and timeline needed to complete graduation requirements.
STUDENT ENROLLMENT PLAN
A written Student Enrollment Plan must be created before a returning adult student begins coursework.
The plan is developed collaboratively by:
- The returning adult student
- A counselor from Rebound School
- A Rebound School administrator
- A District administrator from the Academic Department who is familiar with graduation requirements
The plan will outline the pathway for completing the remaining requirements for a West Ada School District diploma.
At a minimum, the plan will include:
- The specific courses and credits the student still needs to graduate
- A projected timeline for completing coursework
- Any required state assessments or state-mandated coursework
- Tuition costs associated with the program
- The schedule and method for paying tuition
All Student Enrollment Plans must be documented in writing and signed by both the returning student and a District administrator.
OBTAINING PRIOR ACADEMIC RECORDS
Before a Student Enrollment Plan can be finalized, the returning adult student is responsible for obtaining verified copies of previous academic records.
These records should include:
- Courses previously attempted
- Grades earned
- Credits completed
These records allow the District to accurately determine which graduation requirements have already been met and what coursework remains.
COURSE DELIVERY AND PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Returning adult students participate in coursework through a virtual learning format.
Students are classified as Rebound School students, but courses are typically completed through Virtual School House or another approved virtual learning model.
Adult students do not attend in-person classes at the District’s traditional high school campuses.
In limited circumstances, a student may be permitted to enroll in an Idaho Digital Learning Alliance (IDLA) course through the District. These situations require special approval and the student may be responsible for associated course costs.
TUITION AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Because adult students are no longer eligible for state-funded K–12 enrollment, tuition may be required to participate in the program.
Tuition amounts are determined by the Chief Academic Officer and Chief Operations Officer.
In some situations, tuition assistance may be available through the West Ada Education Foundation or other partner organizations. Availability of financial assistance may vary and cannot be guaranteed.
The Student Enrollment Plan will clearly outline:
- The total tuition cost
- Payment timelines
- Accepted payment methods
TRANSFERRING CREDITS
Credits earned at another accredited institution may be transferred to West Ada School District if they meet district requirements.
Credits may be accepted when:
- The institution is accredited by a body recognized by the Idaho State Board of Education (currently Cognia or another approved accrediting organization)
- The course is determined to be equivalent to West Ada graduation requirements
- Accepting the credit does not create additional costs for the District
- Final approval of transfer credits is determined by the Superintendent or designee.
PROGRESS REVIEWS
Some adult students may require more than one school year to complete their coursework.
If a Student Enrollment Plan extends beyond one year—or if the student is unable to complete the plan within the original timeline—the District will schedule a progress review meeting.
During this review, the District may:
- Evaluate the student’s academic progress
- Update or revise the Student Enrollment Plan
- Determine whether continued enrollment in the program is appropriate
Students who are not making reasonable progress toward graduation may have their Student Enrollment Plan discontinued, which would end their enrollment in the program.
DIPLOMA ISSUED
Students who successfully complete all required graduation requirements through this program will receive a West Ada School District high school diploma.
Although students are enrolled through Rebound School during the program, the diploma issued is a general West Ada School District diploma, rather than a diploma from an individual high school within the district.
